Jul 1949: CAA inaugurated the first direct radiotelephone communications service between aircraft and an Air Route Traffic Control Center at the Chicago ARTCC. Extension of this capability to all ARTCCs was completed in 1955.
Jul 10-14, 1938: With a crew of four, Howard Hughes flew a Lockheed L-14 around the world from Floyd Bennett Field, N.Y., and back with stops at Paris, Moscow, Omsk, Yakutsk, Fairbanks, & Minneapolis. This celebrated flight of 14,824 miles took 3 days 19 hours.
Jul 12, 1976: FAA put into effect a national beacon code allocation plan under which pilots flying in the contiguous U.S. would be able to keep the same radar beacon identification code from takeoff to landing, without having to change codes as had previously been required when they flew from one area or altitude to another.
Jul 12, 1957: Eisenhower takes first presidential ride in a helicopter
Jul 15, 1961: The "tall tower" rule (Part 626, Regulations of the Administrator) became
effective. This was the first single regulatory document containing criteria and
procedures for determining potential hazards to air navigation which might be
created by proposed tall structures. The controversial rule was regarded as a
firm rejection of the broadcast industry's contention that such regulation
invaded Federal Communications Commission jurisdiction. On Jul 21, 1961, FAA
Administrator Halaby and FCC Chairman
Newton N. Minow announced agreement on a number of measures to insure
coordination of the new rule with FCC requirements to prevent unnecessary
restriction.
Jul 17, 1965: A 16-year absence of air service between the United States and any part of the Communist bloc by United States or Communist-bloc airlines ended this date when Pan American World Airways began serving Prague, Czechoslovakia.

Land of 10,000 Stories: WWII glider reborn in Minn.
By Boyd Huppert | www.Kare11.com
A group of Minnesota men are trying to rebuild a little known piece of military history - a World War II glider.
The project, which is a labor of love for volunteers, is underway in Eagan at Villaume Industries.
Nothing dainty comes out of Villaume Industries. The builder of trusses and industrial packaging has warehouses filled with wood -- heavy, rugged, wood. With one wispy exception.
In the back of a warehouse, at the back of the Villaume lot, senior volunteers gently glue in place thin strips of wood.
"It started out as a bunch of rusty pipes in a field," says Don Patton as he watches the progress. From that broken metal tubing found in the weeds in Missouri, the seniors are resurrecting history. They are restoring a U.S. Army glider from World War II.

AOPA to pilots: Check notams before flight
Three Camp David violations in one weekend unacceptable
By midday Sunday, July 10, general aviation pilots had busted the prohibited airspace P-40 over Camp David in Maryland three times, with President Barack Obama in residence there.
"We don't know the particulars of the three violations yet, so we don't want to pass judgment," said Craig Spence, AOPA vice president of security and international operations. "But we do know that every bust makes it that much more difficult when we go to the security agencies and urge them to make restrictions less burdensome."
P-40 ordinarily has a 3-nautical-mile radius, but expands to a 10-nm radius when the president or other VIPs are in residence, with a 5-nm radius no-fly zone and an outer squawk-and-talk ring from 5 nm to 10 nm. In addition, pilots operating in the vicinity of P-40 and the nearby Washington, D.C., Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) are expected to monitor 121.5 MHz.
"We cannot stress enough how vital it is that every pilot operating anywhere in the region, whether local or transient, check notams every time you fly, even if it's just a few laps around the pattern." Spence said. "Be sure to get an official preflight briefing, either from a flight service station or DUATS. Use flight planning software like the AOPA Internet Flight Planner. Fifteen minutes of flight planning may save you 90 days on the ground if you get violated for busting a TFR.”
