Greetings A.O. Readers -

Our May issue is here and the cover is celebrating 100 years of Naval Aviation (photo courtesy of Erik Hildebrandt). In this issue we travel to the New England Air Museum in Museums Monthly; Maria is back this month to tell us about her Aerial Adventure to Boulder City, NV; we get to know Winn in Pilot, What's Your Story; and Greg gets fired up about Through The Fence legislation and asks for your help in taking action.

Please remember we want to hear from you. Please submit a Pilot, What's Your Story? questionnaire, upload a video and post your local fly-in on www.AircraftOwner.com. Have a story idea or topic you want discussed? Let us know and we'll make it happen!

Until next week - fly often, fly safe, give flights to those who have never taken to the skies,
and help General Aviation live on.

Cessna's Jack Pelton retires
By JERRY SIEBENMARK | The Wichita Eagle

Jack Pelton, who took over as CEO of Cessna Aircraft Co. on the heels of a recession and steered it to periods of record-breaking growth, retired from the business-jet manufacturer Monday after nearly 11 years there.

Textron announced in a news release the retirement of Pelton, 52, who joined Cessna in 2000 as a senior vice president for product engineering.

"Under Jack's leadership, Cessna achieved many significant program and product milestones and strengthened its position as a thought leader in the aviation industry," Textron chairman and CEO Scott Donnelly said in the release. "We appreciate Jack's efforts and wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Donnelly will run Cessna until Pelton's successor is selected.

A GIFT for women aviators
By Jill W. Tallman | AOPA.org

Mary Latimer has wanted to help more women become pilots ever since she became one herself. She recently hit upon a strategy to help women succeed: Create a program that will help women age 15 and older advance their flight training. She and her husband, assisted by other flight instructors, will hold the Girls In Flight Training (GIFT) academy in July.

The academy will take place at Wilbarger County Airport in Vernon, Texas, and will run from July 29 through Aug. 7. It will include ground school and non-loggable desk-top simulator training. Flight training will be offered in a Cessna 152 or Cessna 172 that the Latimers will provide. Participants can bring other aircraft if they wish.

But there’s no specific curriculum or schedule, because Latimer wants to hear from the women who sign up about what sort of help they need, whether it’s brushing up for a checkride, additional help with cross-country planning, or overcoming nervousness about stall recovery. Participants can stay for as many days as they desire.

“Having a group of women together like [this], I’m hoping the classroom and interaction … will be more important and beneficial,” Latimer said.

Unmanned Phantom Ray makes first flight
By Jonathan E. Skillings | CNET.com

Boeing said today that its Phantom Ray unmanned aircraft has flown on its own for the first time.

The prototype unmanned airborne system, which sports a striking flying-wing design, flew for 17 minutes on April 27, reaching a speed of 178 knots and an altitude of 7,500 feet. More flights will take place in the coming weeks, Boeing said.

"The UAS bar has been raised," Craig Brown, Phantom Ray program manager for Boeing, said in a statement. "Now I'm eager to see how high that bar will go."

The debut flight took place at NASA's Dryden Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base in California, following high-speed taxi tests in March. The flight test program is expected to last roughly six months.

The 36,500-pound Phantom Ray is 36 feet long, has a wingspan of 50 feet, and is powered by an F404-GE-102D turbofan engine. Eventually, it's expected to have a cruising speed of 614 mph, or 0.8 Mach, and an operating altitude of 40,000 feet.

Boeing formally introduced the Phantom Ray almost exactly a year ago. It will be using the aircraft, which the company says it's funding on its own nickel, as a test bed for future unmanned system technology. Eventually, the UAS could be used for a range of military missions including attack, surveillance, and autonomous aerial refueling.

Edwards AFB is also playing host to a similar UAS design from Northrop Grumman, the X-47B, which took its maiden flight there in February. That aircraft is being developed under a contract with the U.S. Navy, with the goal of getting an unmanned aircraft that can take off and land on an aircraft carrier.
