Greetings A.O. Readers -
We
must be doing something right because you folks are making us blush a bit with
all of the positive feedback that has been coming our way from our wonderful AO
community; we truly appreciate it and thank you very much.
Now
that we have all of that mushy stuff out of the way, let us tell you about
a great new feature (among others) we started in the March magazine titled
“Museums Monthly". We begin our tour in
New Jersey with the Deputy Director, Bruce
Fournier of the NASW Wilwood
Aviation Museum. We have a little more about Bruce
and his story below.
Until next week - fly often, fly safe, give flights to those who have never taken to the skies,
and help General Aviation live on.

Mar 6, 1965:
A Navy Sikorsky SH-3A made the first helicopter nonstop flight across the North
American continent, covering 2,116-miles in 15 hours 52 minutes. The helicopter
flew from an aircraft carrier at San Diego, Calif., to another carrier at
Mayport, Fla.

Mar 7, 1969:
A Civil Aeronautics Board rule effective this date imposed the first Federal requirement for air taxi operators to carry liability insurance covering passengers as well as persons and property on the ground. The minimum coverage was $75,000 per person and $100,000 for property damage.

Mar 8, 1928:
The Foreign Air Mail Act expanded the U.S. Post Office's role in international
mail by giving it new authority to award contracts for periods of up to ten
years for transport of mail to foreign countries and U.S. insular possessions.

Mar 8, 1961:
President Kennedy requested FAA Administrator Halaby "to conduct a scientific,
engineering review of our aviation facilities and related research and
development and to prepare a practicable long-range plan to insure efficient and
safe control of all air traffic within the United States." In response to this
directive, the Administrator established the Project Beacon task force--a study
group that brought together eight recognized experts in aeronautic and related
technologies under the chairmanship of Richard R. Hough, vice
president-operations of the Ohio Bell Telephone Company. (See Sep 11, 1961.)

Mar 9, 1961:
Administrator Halaby launched an "air share" program under which he and other top FAA officials met the general aviation community in a series of "hangar sessions" to discuss changes in the Civil Air Regulations. These meetings afforded airmen the opportunity to "air" their views and "share" the benefits of improved rules for safe flying. In Oct 1961, 90 air share meetings were held throughout the nation on a single day.

A Bittersweet Finale for the Last Mission of Discovery
By WILLIAM HARWOOD | www.nytimes.com
The shuttle Discovery braved the hellish fire of re-entry for the last time Wednesday and glided back to Earth to close out the space plane’s 39th and final voyage, an emotion-charged milestone marking the beginning of the end for America’s shuttle program.
Dropping through a partly cloudy sky, the commander, Steven W. Lindsey, and Col. Eric A. Boe of the Air Force guided Discovery through a sweeping left overhead turn, lined up on Runway 15 and floated to a picture-perfect touchdown at 11:57 a.m. Eastern time to wrap up an extended 13-day space station assembly mission.
As it coasted to a stop under a brilliant noon sun, Discovery’s odometer stood at some 5,750 orbits covering nearly 150 million miles during 39 flights spanning a full year in space — a record unrivaled in the history of manned rockets.
“And Houston, Discovery, for the final time, wheels stopped,” Mr. Lindsey radioed flight controllers in Houston.
“Discovery, Houston, great job by you and your crew,” replied Charles Hobaugh, an astronaut in mission control. “That was a great landing in tough conditions, and it was an awesome docked mission you all had.”

How to Grow Pilot Population?
EAA Young Eagles Gets it Right and Creates Aviators
Getting young people engaged in flying in the midst of a technology-filled world may seem like a daunting task, but new data shows that the EAA Young Eagles program is making a significant impact in creating aviators. The results emerged from a joint EAA/FAA project that matched the names of Young Eagles, now ages 15-34, flown since the program’s inception in July 1992 with the FAA registry. EAA Chairman Tom Poberezny announced the figures in his Position Report column published in the March edition of EAA Sport Aviation magazine.
“Since the Young Eagles program began, it has become the most successful youth aviation education program in history,” said Poberezny, who flew the first Young Eagles at the 1992 EAA Fly-In Convention in Oshkosh. “Now with nearly 20 years of flights by EAA-member pilots, the numbers show that Young Eagles is making an impact on the pilot population that is unmatched by any other single program.”
Among the most remarkable findings is that more than 1.1 million Young Eagles who are now ages 15 to 34 are 5.4 times more likely to earn a pilot certificate than those of the same age who have not had a Young Eagles flight. Already, 7.3 percent of all pilots below age 35 are former Young Eagles, a number that will grow as the group reaches the age – late 30s to early 50s – when their participation in aviation accelerates.
