User fees proposal lurks in debt-reduction talks
AOPA calls on members to contact their senators, representatives
www.AOPA.org

User fee threats are lurking just below the surface on Capitol Hill, as the federal government looks for ways to reduce the deficit and find new revenue streams.

AOPA has received information that talk of user fees ranging from $25 to $100 or more could be proposed for services such as flight planning or aircraft operations. Neither a specific proposal nor legislation has been put forth, but the rumblings are growing and AOPA isn’t wasting any time calling on its members to take action.

The administration’s bureaucrats “have elected to put back on the table a user fee that would be attached to flight plans or to aircraft operations. Some say it’s $25, some say it’s $100, some say it only applies to jets,” said AOPA President Craig Fuller in an exclusive announcement on AOPA Live, in which he also provided background information on user fees and an insider look at what’s going on in Washington, D.C. “The fact is it would create a new method for raising money from the general aviation community. It’s a proposal that’s been rejected before, and it’s one we need to reject again today.

“So we need you to write your congressman and we need you to write to your United States senator and let them know you oppose user fees.”

Board praises longtime leader’s contributions and accomplishments
www.AirVenture.org

Tom Poberezny and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) today jointly announced that Poberezny is retiring as chairman of the association and AirVenture Oshkosh after decades of leadership and success.

Louie Andrew, vice president of the EAA Board and chairman of its Executive Committee, said the Board unanimously passed a resolution praising Poberezny for his leadership to the group and success in helping make the nonprofit organization the world’s leading aviation association.  Read more.

Andrew also said the Board thanked Poberezny for his many contributions in making AirVenture Oshkosh the world’s premier aviation event that draws pilots, airplanes, members and guests from around the globe every year.

Poberezny has led EAA – now in its 58th year – since 1989, when he assumed the top position after his father, Paul, retired from active day-to-day involvement. He has served as chairman of the annual EAA Convention for more than 30 years and will assume the title of chairman emeritus on August 1, when his retirement is effective.

FAA Issues Additional Stop Work Orders
www.AviationNews.net

FAA said it has issued additional "stop work orders" over the last 24 hours to construction and technology contractors for critical modernization projects around the country after Congress failed to pass an FAA bill. The agency said it has halted dozens of major projects ranging from long-term runway safety initiatives to NextGen air traffic control research and testing.

FAA on Monday told contractors to stop work on millions of additional dollars of construction projects to build and modernize control towers and other aviation infrastructure across the country.

"I am making a simple and straightforward request to Congress: pass a clean FAA bill and immediately put thousands of FAA employees, construction workers, planners and engineers across America to work. In these tough economic times, we can ill afford to lay off hard-working Americans whose families depend on them," said DOT Secretary Ray LaHood

"The real world implications of congressional inaction are serious. People are out of work and the FAA cannot conduct necessary work to keep our aviation system competitive and moving forward," said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt.
